Receiving Burpee Seeds Catalogues Means Spring Is On The Way

Burpee Seeds has been selling seeds and garden supplies since 1876. Farmers and home gardeners alike purchase their seeds along with retail stores and it all happens in the headquarters at Warminster, Pennsylvania. W. Atlee Burpee founded the company when he was only 18 and it only left family control for a short time when it was bought by General Foods in the seventies. It returned to the family in 1988 and is currently run by the son of the founder, David Burpee.

In 1888 Atlee began to experiment with seeds from Europe and tried to make them suitable to grow in the United States. He perfected Surehead cabbage and developed a better variety of carrot called Long Orange both of which are still sold today. He also developed the first green bean that had no string on the pod. He searched the country finding farmers and botanists that developed their own variety of vegetables and flowers

Atlee died in 1915 and by that time his seed company was very popular sending out almost a million copies of the seed catalog per year. At this time many of his customers were farmers but home gardening was in style with the advent of the victory garden during the World Wars. Burpee seeds could be purchased mail order or from many local stores all over the country.

David or D. B. Burpee became an expert and hybridization and developed many different hybrid plants for the seed company. One of the first flowers he hybridized was a Nasturtium developed in 1934 called Double Hybrid Nasturtium. Right after he developed the red and gold hybrid marigold that adorns many gardens every summer. Burpee also changed sweet corn forever when they brought forth Golden Bantam. Prior to that the yellow corn was only fed to livestock because it was not sweet.

In the forties new and improved methods of making new varieties of plants came into being. One of these methods was to use a normally poisonous substance from autumn crocus in order to change the chromosome pattern of other plants. This caused different and vivid colors in some flowers including the snap dragon. Another flower that was changed in this manner was the black eyed Susan. From this process the Gloriousa Daisy was created.

In 1991 George J. Ball, owner of another seed company joined forces with D. B. Burpee and merged. This created the largest and most profitable seed testing lab in the US. Today the company sells over 1100 different kinds of seeds.

Today the Burpee catalog can be downloaded free online and it is still sent out by mail. The catalog is divided by flowers, vegetables, other plants, and supplies for gardening. The items in the catalog cost anywhere from one dollar to fifty dollars.

Burpee offers a guarantee on all their products. They must be satisfactory or a complete refund will be given as long as it is 1 year from the day of purchase. If an online charge pops up on a credit card that you did not charge they will take care of it as much as they can within the law. Burpee Seeds is synonymous with dependability and they are one of the oldest seed companies in business today and have developed and created many of the vegetables and flowers we have in our gardens today.
