My wife has wanted a new mattress for quite some time. If I wanted to golf it would have to be a 5:30 tee time or not at all. But the fact of the matter was, golf was my vacation from our vacation, and I had been looking forward to playing San Diego for months.

We played three courses during our six day hiatus in southern California. Each seemed to offer something distinct and distinguishable from the rest. I was really hoping for the opportunity to lose a sleeve of balls into the ocean at world renowned Torrey Pines, but it wasn’t in the cards. Tee times were booked months before we scheduled our getaway. All in all I sampled sand from the traps at Coronado with its spectacular views of the Coronado Bay Bridge and hotel Coronado, Balboa Park with its tree lined fairways, and Eastlake Country Club with its beautifully manicured and friendly design. Oh and I saw some dolphins, killer whales, and a miniature version of the Golden Gate Bridge made out of blocks too.

I can’t tell you much about how that vacation differed from our other trips to Sea World or Disneyland or just about any other destination. The one thing I do remember vividly is the cool ocean breeze across my face and the smell of the morning grass at each course we played. To me, visiting some far off locale without sampling the local greens is practically a sin. Golf makes the vacation, even if it’s scattered in amongst family reunions and super-sized water parks.
